Christian charity,  Rapid Relief Team (RRT) have been on the ground since Wednesday, serving three square meals to around 100 firefighters working to extinguish a large fire burning in Canungra.

The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) requested assistance from RRT at 8am Wednesday to help feed firefighters at the Rural Fire Service (RFS) base, about 2 kilometres from the blaze.

Lester Sharples, Queensland Regional Team Leader said volunteers from the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church were taking it in shifts to serve firefighters something different for each meal.

“It was a no-brainer for us – as soon as we got the call from the QFES our volunteers got ready to support the emergency operation to put out this large fire in Canungra,” Mr Sharples said.

“We have been serving up to 100 meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner since Wednesday lunch-time and our volunteers will be here as long as we are needed.

“Our volunteers have been working around the clock to serve something slightly different to firefighters – so far we have planned burgers, bacon and egg rolls, chicken burgers, meatball subs and more.

“The least we can do is make sure the food is good and having supported a number of emergency operations including fires, we know that matters because these operations often get extended.

“Our volunteers are locals, it is part of our community spirit as Christians to support each other in times of crisis, which is why we will continue to work here until Sunday evening as conditions look to worsen.

“Our firefighters are volunteers too, so we are all here by choice because we care and because we want to protect and support our community,” he said.

Lloyd Grimshaw from the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church said RRT have supported numerous emergency operations where large numbers of personnel need to be fed.

“Our volunteers are part of the local communities and when there is a need, they put on an apron and support those who are putting themselves at risk to protect others,” Mr Grimshaw said.

RRT is a charity of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, made possible by church volunteers who provide catering services at emergency service operations, fundraisers, community events and more.
